I asked ROOT BOY SLIM (Slim) about that day when Warner pulled the hose from his arm. I sat there waiting while the suit/tie crowd slithered passed. They ushered Slim in and one in a necktie squeezing his throat said, "Uh. Hum."  Andrew Singer (Videoman and Archivalist)      http://www.videostar.us   {This site has more ROOT BOY SLIM and other BANDS}

...it was awful, you know I am really a politically astute poet and I'm educated and opinionated and the music is marketable. I'm from Asheville, North Carolina and grew up in D.C., and attended private schools. He was considered by teachers to be an academic prodigy but his record explains that at the same time Slim was a disciplinary problem child. Mr. MacKenzie the stuffed shirt mumbled, in evaluating our portfolio of Musicians, Artists and Bands, we have come to the conclusion that you may not be our cup of  tea or so. "SO." You are here because we are closing our deal and henceforth we shall not be working with Root Boy Slim. Slim graduated Yale in 1977 with two degrees. Would he have to break out the sharkskin tuxedo from the olden days and play the basement of a nut house for a pea? They paid Slim off. The album became part of the Warner portfolio and the story of the buyout became part of music history. There will be no further negotiations, they tried to wish him well. Slim engaged them further and was told that He was uncontrollable and that They could more readily sell the Sex Pistols and to Slim this meant that Warner was in control of the Sex Pistols and would be putting lots of money into the Sex Pistols, making them a long term project. They said he was a unique artist but did not fit the vision Warner had for itself. The final chunk of money from Warner sent Slim into a whirlwind and he spent every penny plus on a binge. I heard some good stories of Sex and Drugs but without confirmation, I can only suppose. Suppose it was me or you? Slim had a tremendous belief in his music and believed Warner had made the mistake and he could redeem himself in the music business by producing more albums, and more albums, and more albums. Slim realized that he fell short by the Warner deal and that other artists depending on that money would never see a penny. Jo Lee from Joe's Record Paradise tells the tale. Slim likened those albums to business cards, trying to find another Warner. Slim and Bob Greenlee made quite the team and the early days of both and the final days of our Yale Heroes are best told by a true fan of both. The very deep and intricate stories of their lives was intertwined by music and is told with compassion and respect. Bill's knowledge about Bob and Slim is so important that I requested a link. Bill graciously gave his permission for the Root Fans to have access to: http://www.williamvandyke.com   Bill is a player and he plays with Ernie Lancaster and Mark Hodgson, awesome. William Van Dyke is a Singer, Songwriter, Recording Artist, Vietnam Veteran, Biker and friend and fan of Root Boy Slim and Bob Greenlee. We love Bill.
Everyone asks me about Donald Fagen, Walter Becker and the Steely Dan connection to Slim and I tell them that I was not privy to that information and that it was not to be discussed. I did not see any reason to open an old wound so I kept my mouth shut. I do not spread rumors or make idle gossip, my mother does that. There was talk amongst the band and I soaked it up like a sponge as I do listen to gossip. I can only say for sure that I found a place to look for the things that hard core Slim fans want to know. Yes, it has links and Root Boy Slim is named. So, go there if you must and tell them Andrew sent you to the Steely Dan Internet Resource site by John Granatino.  http://www.granatino.com/sdresource/index.htm (when the key password page comes up, put in the password and close and the site comes up and everything you will have wished for is eye level)

Slim was damaged goods and his investors including me decided to make the long term investment in Root Boy Slim. Music these days have a much bigger mould, and in my opinion he would have fit somewhere. Our goals as supporters and backers and artists was to place our own resources behind Root Boy Slim and allow Slim wholeheartedly to develop their music and launch their albums and for me to make the video's. Down but not out, Slim left the stuff shirts and never looked back at them as they already had plans for the Sex Pistols. I am so happy that Warner nixed Root Boy Slim, I probably never would have been able to enter into an agreement to have videotaped Root Boy Slim. I never got to tape the Sex Pistols. Whatever happened to them? Once again the answer came through from Perfect Sound Forever and writer Billy Bob Hargus in his story, "The Sex Pistols' Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle." http://www.furious.com/perfect/pistols.html              Contact me:  singercheck@aol.com

ROOT BOY SLIM had a slew of articles written about them, I have tried to secure them all. I read what I had and I found a common pattern, they all were amazed by Slim. They wanted to express what they were feeling at the moment and Slim was a great way to slip in a message about society regarding homelessness, hunger, World War III, politrix {cereal for big kids, Slim chose Froot Loops). When I talked to Slim about all of those articles I learned that he worked hard for each one and struggled to get the press he got for the band. Interviews become harder to get as time from Warner progressed. Who wants a could've been. Slim was most pleased by his numerous write-ups in the Rolling Stone Magazine and Charles M. Young wrote such an eloquent article that I searched him out on the internet and he gave me permission to put this article on this site. Chuck, thank you and Rolling Stone for so much support for the ROOT BOY SLIM MOVIE.

ROOT BOY SLIM & THE SEX CHANGE BAND (article reprinted by permission of Charles M. Young and more writing by Charles can be found at The First Church of Dan Akroyd, Slim and I went there on Saturday nights)

Mark my words: in three years, Van Halen is going to be fat and self-indulgent and disgusting, and they'll follow Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin right into the toilet. In the meantime, they are likely to be a big deal. Their cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" does everything right, and they have three or four other cuts capable of jumping out of the radio the same way "Feels Like The First Time" and "More Than A Feeling" did amid all the candyass singer/songwriters and Shaun Cassidy-ass twits.

Van Halen's secret is not doing anything that's original while having the hormones to do it better than all those bands who have become fat and self-indulgent and disgusting, Edward Van Halen has mastered the art of lead/rhythm guitar in the tradition of Jimmy Page and Joe Walsh; several riffs on this record beat anything Aerosmith has come up with in years. Vocalist David Lee Roth manages the hard-rock feat of infusing the largely forgettable lyrics with energy and not sounding like a castrato at the same time. Drummer Alex Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony are competent and properly unobtrusive.

These guys also have the good sense not to cut their hair or sing about destroying a hopelessly corrupt society on their first album. That way, hopelessly corrupt radio programmers will play their music.

ROOT BOY SLIM AND THE SEX CHANGE BAND WITH THE ROOTETTES, on the other hand, are already fat and self-indulgent and disgusting. This is a good thing because, in bypassing artistic maturity for immediate decadence, they have the distinction of being the first rock band in history to complain that their trusses are slipping ("My Wig Fell Off"). Oddly enough, they are also a good rock band. You would expect they'd be just clowns with a repertoire like "Heartbreak of Psoriasis" and "Too Sick to Reggae," but this outfit can play blues-based rock with anybody. Gary Katz, of Steely Dan fame, has produced a clean and eminently listenable instrumental sound while retaining the uniqueness of the Root's voice, which resonates like an emphysema victim vomiting inside the Goodyear blimp (check out "Boogie 'til You Puke").

All in their thirties, Root Boy and the rest can hardly be defined as New Wave. They are, however, part of the general movement of lunacy and satire that is shaking up the music industry. A lot of people thought the Sex Pistols were going to blaze the trail into the Top Ten., but the real breakthrough was Randy Newman's "Short People." Parliament/Funkadelic is having a similar psychological effect in black music. Like these two acts and unlike the punks, Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band are both humorously and musically accessible. Their stance as over-the-hill wimps is just unthreatening enough that hopelessly corrupt radio programmers might play their music. I hope so.

To Charles M. Young and Rolling Stone Magazine we say, WRITE ON!

Naming names, Slim was a pro at getting people to do what he needed to get done. Slim was like a magnet and he was a huge attraction, his friends would do anything to help him and ROOT BOY SLIM BANDS in all incarnations. We would pick up the slack in every direction but Slim was most definitely the leader and director, it was his show and if he liked you and you were willing to participate...you were in. The inner circle was truly small and with Slim at the helm of the operation we rode the roller coaster, up on show night and down until the next show. In between I would videotape other bands and Slim would meet me there and we would ride out another night of anticipation. Root Boy Slim and Capitol Offense played the D.C. circuit which included Maryland and Virginia. Slim liked to tour, he enjoyed being a star and having people recognize him. A game of sorts developed between his fans and himself over albums, they wanted them for free and he would convince them to buy. I bought mine from him and never got my change back, but he did sign mine. I wonder if I can get my $10 back from someone on e-bay? I looked for Slim at the end of a show because this hot little number wanted an album bad and she had the money in her fist. I saw Slim and walked over to him with the skirt and he pointed to Tony Miller and said he was selling the Root Loot. I brought the nuptial to Tony and she threw the $5 bill at him and grabbed the album and ran to Slim for an autograph. Slim signed it for another $5 and headed to the bar for a blast. Tony passed and he was a great person that I first met when he was selling albums for the NIGHTHAWKS and ASSASSINS circa 1987 Washington D.C., USA.

Back to the name game, I am going to try to name everyone I can find that was connected with Root Boy Slim and when possible to talk about their lives, before and after. We are very fortunate that people wrote articles about Root Boy Slim. Charles was very easy to locate.  Other contributors have been harder to locate and or made it very successfully. Some may not wish to offer a tit-bit. Some do, do you? I would be overjoyed if they changed their mind's and offered their aid. I have been actively making an international search for ROOT BOY SLIM INFO since 1999. In 1999 I created the original     http://www.rootboyslimmovie.com  and that site drew an incredible amount of traffic and much of it due to Mr. Bill from I.R.S. Records.

Women, girls, ladies, a favorite hobby of Slim. There is no doubt that they acted as a creative element in the whole sha-bang. Beautiful and talented women such as the Empress of the Rootettes Cherie Grasso and performing artist Deanna Bogart http://www.deannabogart.com was truly a supreme addition to the band, singer, songwriter, pianist, saxophonist, Deanna is a talent that Hollywood has somehow missed. Movie producers and major execs (I know by the e-mails you check out this site) must see Deanna, Nikki, Esmirelda and Gloria in person. All of these women are phenomenal talents. Esmirelda (meetthetidbits.com) is an amazing musician and her efforts for Root Boy Slim must be acknowledged. Beautiful women like Gloria Jolivet who was working on her own music took time out from her schedule with Bo Diddley to support the band. Gloria is working on a book loaded with pictures and stories about her musical career. Nikki Rouse has credentials a mile long and include singer, songwriter, Hottie, poet, storyteller, lover of life, guitarist, dancer, Hottie, performer, family girl with husband Dave and children, supporter of Root Boy Slim. Nikki has a CD you must have for X-Mas called "Chocolate and Morphine," check her out at: http://www.nikkirouse.com  Did I say Hottie?

The original movie site was ravaged by Porn sites. We don't sell porn or smut although we may indulge from time to time. I pulled it and now we are going at it again. Once they catch up, they will try to push their wares on us and this time we will be prepared. We have lots of credit cards this time around. Those that loved and cared for ROOT BOY SLIM and his artistic musicians believe that a documentary would make a wonderful movie. Many have stepped up to the plate and more continue to surface. Most of the comments I have received involve how the movie should be edited as far as spontaneity showing the enormous energy of the band. The many clips, photo's and articles have added to the foundation which I had already collected. I expect this site to be the culmination of all of our efforts in bringing the movie to fruition. Oh, the possibilities. I thought of who could possibly play Slim and my mind came up with Dr. John The Night Tripper, could you imagine him climbing over the White House fence as Slim once did? Slim was a man of 225 pounds+ of dynamite with a one inch fuse, got a light...you are already lit. When I think of Slim and how he was reduced to hawking an album for $5, I want to (BOOGIE  TIL YOU) puke. He would sign them, they liked that. I see Root Boy Slim video's whenever I want, if you agree you know what to do. Any signed memorabilia out there you want to sell? Bootlegs, autographed underwear?

TURDZILLA, in an effort to save my community ravaged by HURRICANE WILMA and as I wandered aimlessly in the knee high tainted water in the black of night a paper tiger brushed up against my thigh...my eyes wide open, my popped ears listening for the opening of the mouths of gutter rats grabbing and leeching, I thought I heard the voice of ROOT BOY SLIM,  I am Wilma's monster child that can not sleep, fiery red mad at pumps that don't work. I trudged through the black of  a starry, starry night. The town failed me, broadcasts down, NO FM or even AM. No cell phone, no power, no roof, can't poop. No flush, no wash, push car. Lines, lines everywhere. I trudged through the muck to high ground and there lurking and loving and living from the slime was the root of a man. I heard Turdzilla and it reminded me of  Root Boy Slim.        http://www.TURDZILLA.COM

Slim and the Band were definitely separate components of a well managed music machine. Each person and there are many mentioned below added to the intensity and creativity of the many facets to the quality of musicianship based on the past and present efforts. The Heroes mentioned on both sites utilized their own energy and applied  it to the career definitively of  Ken and supportively deserve accolades.  Our supportive Heroes are Heroes in their own right as I repeat because I have tracked many of their careers and I am proud of the integrity and heart which Ken was blessed and by his friends with as much generosity. I always thought that the movie would mushroom with the help of a few other Root Boy Slim players. A decade plus of decadence. <GREEDY>  How did we do it? Slim would paint 714 on his forehead. We have a great climax, they will come. I found myself back in a North Carolina Bar, back where it all started. I slid a stool under my butt and turned to look at the stage where Root and the band played and I remembered that night so vividly and I could hear actually hear them playing "Boogie Til You Puke, and Dare To Be Fat." Suddenly, the house lights dimmed and on the wall was a poster of the Duke of Puke and the Sex Change Band so I put a dollar in the juke and played "Loneliest Room." I wondered if Matt Barrett from the Poster Guys delivered it. Poster Guys delivers on the outskirts of North Carolina. Bands playing North Carolina, home of Root must check them out at http://www.theposterguys.com Matt is the key to the North Carolina scene and has built a mind-blowing site at http://northcarolinatravels.com Here you will find heartwarming pictures of North Carolina, breathtaking views, what to do and special gifts. Then there is this collection of photo's and posters of bands from and that have toured North Carolina. Root and I liked Bad Brains from D.C. Keep up the excellent work Matt, you have our support! Tom Lepson delivered, with his talent on the keyboards and his vocals, the band CAPITOL OFFENSE was composed of  top notch musicians who still play and have made music their lifelong love. ROOT BOY SLIM and CAPITOL OFFENSE, quite the package. Tom Lepson was a powerhouse, a hot commodity and multifaceted. Check out the autographed copy of the Lepson Recording, I got Slim to autograph that record and he wasn't even part of the band. I know that all of you collectors of 70's and 80's music memorabilia want this record. I am saving my collection for the day when ROOT BOY SLIM makes the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or a fat wad of cash.

ROOT BOY SLIM DISCOGRAPHY or Who, What, Where and we know WHY$&$.

DIRECT CURRENT was "THE SECOND HOMEGROWN MUSIC FESTIVAL" compilation and was released in 1977 under the SOUNDS REASONABLE RECORDS and TAPES INC., label. The material was recorded live at Lisner Auditorium, George Washington University under the auspices of Michael Schreibman, Elliot Ryan, Richard Harrington, Roger R. Byrd, Lou Sordo, Ed Barnett and Jim Freeman. The Production Coordinator was Stephen Ullrich. The Album is an amazing piece of history for the D.C. scene, as most of the musicians have continued in the musical genre. Weasel and Josh of WHFS/FM were the Master's of Ceremonies (The sharpest mind's of the times). I have had the pleasure of videotaping many of the stars of this showcase. ROOT BOY SLIM and the SEX CHANGE BAND composed of Root Boy Slim (vocals), Locker Room Ernie Lancaster (guitar), Cosmo Creek (pedal steel guitar), Winston "Spots" Kelly (organ), Rattlesnake Rattles aka Bob Greenlee (bass), Tom Ruger (drums), Ron Holloway (tenor sax) and The Rootettes, Cherie and Mickie. Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band played "Express Train" and "Ya Can't Quit My Club."

THE NIGHTHAWKS led by Jim Thackery (guitars and vocals) My all-time favorite musician. Mark Wenner (harp and vocals) Mark is an inspirational harmonica player. Pete Ragusa (drums and vocals), and Jan Zukowski (bass and vocals). I love THE NIGHTHAWKS, I saw them play many times. I have followed their career and own their albums, they kick butt. They played "Ubangi Stomp" and "Pretty Girls and Cadillacs."

POWERHOUSE had George Leh (vocals), Pierre G.T. Beauregard (harp), Tom Principato (guitar) {I videotaped Tom Principato and I really studied his guitar, the wood was worn smooth from running his hands down the neck, a true master}. David Birkin (tenor sax), Stephen Jacobs (bass), and Steve Brown (drums), they played "My Babe" a Willie Dixon tune and "Fever."

BILL HOLLAND & RENT'S DUE featured Bill Holand (piano and guitar), Pete Kennedy (guitar), Larry Strother (saxophone), Scott Taylor (drums) and Wade Matthews (bass) and tore up the stage with "Cogito Ergo Sum Ne" and "Hamburger Heaven."

THE CATFISH HODGE BAND performed with "Sailin' Shoes" and "Holiday,"  they brought every musician they could find in the area. Catfish Hodge (vocals and guitar), Mike McQuillin (lead guitar), Jimmy Powers (harp), George McWhirter and Lee Robertson (trombones), Randy Ottenger (trumpet), Duane Campbell (bass), Mark Cuff (drums), Dixie Ballin, Diana Crawford, Marian Deegan (vocals).

What about the people, oh yeah. I phoned Bob Greenlee to get the real information about Yale, record deals, Kingsnake Records, ASCAP, music, business, money...
My mother Janet Singer (a long time friend of Root Boy Slim and supporter of the band, she told me to say she was single and available) would be doing the interview and I would do the video. Bob was a most courteous and casual interviewee. Bob gave us a tour of his home and studio and then we proceeded into the interview. We visited Ernie Lancaster and continued with our interviews of the Root Boy Slim members. We learned that the music business is a tangled web of promises and a little payoff for a lot of work. As Bob and Ernie unraveled many of the innermost secrets of Root Boy Slim and the music business, we realized that we had done a very important part of the movie and that we had part of the backbone. We tried to cover every possible aspect of the business and thought about our questions carefully, the interviews are interesting. Slim called me up and told me it was very important that I get over to his apartment in D.C., immediately. I drove the van to his new apartment and he greeted me with his breakfast, a Guinness Stout Ale and asked if I had breakfast. I had already eaten. He wanted to show me around his new home, I looked to the left and then to the right and the place was bare. He said follow me to the bedroom and I thought that was the closet. The place was tiny but Slim was proud. When I asked him why I was there, he told me he needed a bed and some furniture and that I would help. I said yes. Then he told me he had a flat tire and that there was a key for the locks, the key was missing and he didn't have a spare. I broke off the lock, removed the tire and had a new one put on. He thanked me and drove off. Later that night he called about a bed and furniture. I loaded up a waterbed in the van and drove it to his apt. I set it up, filled it while he watched the Root video's. I heard him laughing. When the bed was full, he tried it out and then we discussed the next big show, THE 10 YEAR REUNION. This was going to be a conglomeration of all of his former and present players. He wanted things to be just perfect and wanted me to tape from a certain place which he showed me at the club. While there a stripper type kept pestering him for an autograph, he wanted a beer. He signed his name on her shirt across her silicone breasts. What a man! He told me that she expected that. She was trying to get him drunk, she must have had her daddy's credit card. She said she wanted to make Slim feel real good and she was real bad. Slim told me that he was happy that the roadies weren't around because he had a clear shot at a nice looking girl. I sipped my 7-UP and watched her slobber over Slim. He whispered something and they left. He gave me the high sign and I sat there alone until the bartender said, "do you believe it?" Our hero in his 7-11 shirt walking out with Miss Hottie. She turned and winked. It is only because of Rock and Roll.

I never met Rick White and am not sure where he is although I bet it has something to do with music. I know that I have been working the movie thing for 10 years. I want to get it right. Yes, I want a copy of the Direct Current Album featuring Root Boy Slim in 1977 and I sent you a check, I should've paid on the net. Oops, that day I got the album and now I have to find someone with a turntable.
